View Full Version : What is Black Friday? - an Explanation

I've seen a lot of confusion over exactly what and when Black Friday is, so here's a little explanation.

Black Friday (BF) is the day after Thanksgiving. It's the traditional start of the official Christmas shopping season. On this day, stores have some of their best sales of the year. Massive discounts on certain items, loss leaders to get you in the door, lots and lots of rebates. This is the day you've heard about on the news when people line up outside stores in lawn chairs at 2 AM just to be one of the first ones in.

To quote Wikipedia:
The "black" in the name comes from the standard accounting practice of using red ink to denote negative values (i.e., losses) and black ink to denote positive values (profits). Black Friday is the day when retailers traditionally get back "in the black" after operating "in the red" for the previous months. The term may also be used by retail employees to express their antipathy towards it, as an analogy to Black Thursday as a day of general chaos.

Are there excellent sales on Black Friday? Absolutely. Are you going to find any one item at a lower price than you could get it through SD at some other point during the year? Maybe, maybe not. We've all been spoiled by SD. But when it comes to pure quantity of good prices, BF is the undeniable king.

Thank goodness this is an information thread. I was a little concerned when I saw the thread title. Thanks OP, hopefully people will read this before asking.

Moderators: Make this a sticky so we don't get a lot of unnecessary posts of people asking.

This is my favorite "holiday" of the year... I start looking forward to it from the day after the previous Black Friday, lol!

Benjie: Consider changing the title to "What is Black Friday? - an Explanation"

I anticipated some coming in here to tell some kid what the greatest shopping day of the year was. You, however, have done a fine job with your explanation.

I'm not sure if they'll drop the price on a brand new system. But hey, there is always hope!

Don't expect any price drops on Xbox 360, the best you'll find is bundle deals where maybe you'll get 2 games for $90 more.

Console systems actually have a price lock, that's why you always see the same price on new systems anywhere you go.

Save your money for a PS3 next spring, you'll be glad you did. Xbox 360 re-uses existing, incrementally-better hardware. PS3 has the new Cell processor with much better advances in distributed processing power and video rendering capabilities.

See this trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4, rendered in real-time on the PS3. At the Toyko Game Show, they demonstrated that it indeed was rendered in real-time and was not some pre-edited demo, as they manipulated the camera and objects in the trailer. Very cool. Obviously, some graphic quality is lost in the compression to this video, but if you have a good LCD (like a Dell), it'll look pretty cool.

You should also try to track down a high-quality version of the Killzone PS3 trailer. You'll see some impressive physics from their physics engine, not to mention also the PS3 video quality.

My 2 cents.

2 CENTS OF A PS FANBOY.

Since XBOX1 was ahead of PS2 even if XBOX2 isn't a giant leap forward (which IGN says it is) PS3 still has an up hill climb to compare.

And lets not forget there is more then raw numbers to compare...You add XBOXLIVE and XBOX360 is must own.

Sigh... PS2 consoles and games outsold Xbox1 in every market, though the Xbox1 did deliver slightly better graphics. Xbox1 had no presence in any market beyond the domestic US market -- case in point, selling only 5000 or so units in Japan. One out of every two U.S. households (on average) has a PS2.

For the next gen, consult these two comparative hardware reviews:
XBOX 360 (http://www.gamepower.com.au/?aid=2381)
PS3 (http://slickdeals.net/?t=&u2=http://www.gamepower.com.au/?aid=2386)

Simple comparison:

Xbox360:
tri-core processor capable of 115.2 GFLOPS, and a GPU capable of 500 million polygons/sec with 1080i res.

PS3:
Cell processor with 7-vector CPU's (+ 1 for redundancy) capable of 218 GFLOPS, and a GPU capable of two Geforce 6800 Ultra's performance -- note one 6800 Ultra can do 638 million polygons/sec -- with both 1080i and 1080p res.

There, I'm done on this matter. But if you people post, do so un-biased with data backing up your claims, whether for product or price discussions. Thank you.

That said, we return to the regularly scheduled Black Friday discussions, and buy Xbox360 at the discretion of your wallet. ;)

Price points will likely be the same, about $400, or at worst the PS3 might hit $500 -- I'm guessing, but I'd be surprised if it went higher. The Xbox360 costs $400, except it does have a $300 crippled version that requires enough upgrades just to support Xbox Live that the soccer moms will end up paying much more than $400 -- brilliant marketing strategy, I'd admit.

Anyhow, GFLOPS = Giga FLoating point Operations Per Second, or 10^9 (1 billion) floating point ops per sec. This cannot be the single measure of a device's performance, however with the large discrepancy here, and the much more capable graphics processing unit (video card) in the PS3 -- and from seeing the demos -- it looks well poised to provide some kick-ass games.

At the end of the day, Xbox 360 and PS3 will be comparable graphically. Xbox 360 will have Xbox live. PS3 will have a bluray drive. Xbox 360 will have many more games available when PS3 comes out. PS3 is guaranteed to sell well which will allow it to gain support. You can't go wrong with either one.

If money is no concern, then buy the thin-PS2 now for $150, and then buy the PS3 in the spring for $400-500. (aka buy them both).

Otherwise, it depends how long you want to wait. A third of a year for PS3 for much better graphics, or do you want it right now (meaning PS2).

god darn it, I've been fooled by raw numbers and benchmarks all the time, but now imma wise up. Unless you have PS3 and Xbox 360 next to each other running games, I bet you wouldn't notice any difference. Guys omfg who gives a crap!!! so you're saying Xbox 360 is crap? Both of them is good. The only reasons I could think of you getting one over the other is
1)fanboy...
2)better games on either console(GTA series, or Halo)
3)some multimedia features you would like
seriously, it's hard to put in words but I bet you won't regret buying either system. Xbox 360 will probably have a slightly higher revenue anyway because of its earlier release. I admit however, PS2 has many good games.
Seriously, are you gonna go like, "oh my god the PS3 has 5ghz more power in rendering power so I can't see all the pixels over there in the background" when you're playing a game? jesus...

G-Unit... if you have seen the demonstrations by both Microsoft and Sony for what their hardware can actually do visually, i.e. not just raw numbers, then you would be much more impressed with the PS3. That was one of the first things I mentioned, including links for E3 demos of PS3 games (obviously compressed and lower quality, but you can get a sense from those) and then I backed it up with numbers. I even gave Microsoft due credit for a visually superior console on the xbox1/ps2.

Stop ranting, posts like that and porche's cause this community to be less welcoming and useful to new, potential SlickDealers, and discourages people from posting useful information.

I guess this is where the questions go, so here is one.

This is my first year in the States and I've never seen any Black Friday before (and yes I am a bit excited). Are most of the deals B&M only? Or are there as many online deals as B&M ones?

Also is it true that people step on each other on the way in? Because I'm a small guy and I don't wanna be stepped on.

Thanks.

Most of the deals are B&M only, although you'll find a few online retailers hopping on the bandwagon but nowhere near as much of the hype.

And yes, it's true. There have been instances of trampling for toys and fighting for $20 DVD players and of course, tons of people trying to get in at one time. If you can get there early and move fast wearing comfortable non-slip shoes, you might survive.

explanation of a black friday for me was: (from 2000-2005)
I get to work at 4 or 5am before the sun comes up, then work for about 16 hours, by the time I leave work, it'd be dark again, the entire work day I'd never see the light of the sun, which is why I call it "black"

There are nowhere near as many online deals. Half the point of having the big sales is to get you in the door by tantalizing you with a great discount on that one thing you just can't live without. The retailers are hoping you'll pick up a few other things you saw on your way to the register.
Also is it true that people step on each other on the way in? Because I'm a small guy and I don't wanna be stepped on.
It really depends on where you go.

If you go to the Walmart in Irving, Texas, you can expect to hob-nob with a bunch of trashy people who may very well stampede like a herd of rabid sheep. The double coincidence of it being a Walmart and located in Irving is just asking for trouble.

By contrast, the Fry's Electronics store here in Coppell was a joy to shop at last year. There was no pushing, shoving, or cutting in line. The line was around the building; I'd have to guess that the crowd was about 50% Indian, and they all seemed to behave in a pleasant, civilized manner. My fellow American dispsticks over at Walmart could learn a thing or two from them.

I'm guessing there shouldn't be any PS3's available on BF... Launch is on November 17, the week before BF. Some places may hold a few for BF, but I am guessing there won't be enough that it would be worth staying in line, past the #1 or #2 spot.

 Definately! BF 2004 I was at Best Buy by 12 and waited in my car until the first people showed up at around 12:30. I wanted to be first in line at Best Buy for BF 2005 so I drove from out of state (family thanksgiving) and got there at 10 to find that the line had about 10 people already in it. Black friday sales are really just old items in overstock that hard to get rid of from the earlier seasons and this is the best time(meaning Black Friday) to get rid of them before Christmas.

examples: Free DVDs, after rebates, CDs, cheaper (older model) LCD monitors, Connection Cables.

ps: But the older models aren't that much worse than the newer ones anyway.

The "Black" in Black Friday has nothing to do with race. It's when stores get into the black, or profit, and out of the red.

xbox 360 comes out on november 6th!!!! maybe i can get somethin on this!!!
Usually BF's are for products that have been proven to sell and have been sold for a long time. They might do a BF on the original Xbox and accessories but I doubt the 360, it's too new. Lots of places do BF to get rid of stock they have sitting in the warehouse.

New to the country?

Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thursday of November. You're thinking of Christmas, which is always on the 25th of December.

question for you all....say u buy something now at the regular price (that is going to be in the black-friday ad) can you then bring in the Black Friday ad and get a pricematch..since its a lower advertised price with-in 30 days of purchase?

what about buy now...return on black friday and rebuy at the same time....have people had success with this?

Yes & no... no do not attempt it on BF... Yes, do that... However, when buying a higher dollar item NOW take the salespersons name & info to contact him... Let him know you're concerned that it will be a better deal, but well aware they'll have little (if any) time to PM it on this day, would he mind doing it for you on the following saturday...
several reasons: he'll always say yes (or she). BUT, as well if they leave, or get fired- at least then you have a name to put with the information they give. All the 'good' stores have a PM policy- however, they also have a BF policy & generally that overwhelms them before dealing with little old you (who portray yourself as average joe, NOT a SD person in know on these things!)
I have not yet had a situation where I couldn't make it happen, in years of tv's, stereos, games & such- however, I've had some that I was pretty worried it'd EVER happen, just try to be patient, polite & not uptight, dot all the i's for them & cross all the t's.

It is YMMV though, I read reports on here where others took a long ride on a short bus- so, you just never know...

Black Friday - The day after Thanksgiving in the United States. Retailers generally see an upward spike in sales and consider this to be the start of the holiday shopping season. It's common for retailers to offer special promotions and to open early to draw in customers. However, these promotions typically pale in comparison to the deals which can be found on Slickdeals.net, a website poplulated primarily by coupon connivers, price mistake gorgers, and cheapskate bastards.

what is a good time to start lining up.....say at a best buy? 12? 1?

It's the start of the Holiday season and usually one of the largest total sale days of the year, and the money that the retailers make on that one day is what puts them into the black for the rest of the year (meaning that they were operating at a loss up/break even), so it's not black as in Dark or bad, but meaning MONEY MONEY MONEY, and some stores refer to it as Green Friday.

Whenever I finish my Thanksgiving dinner, it's out the door and to Best Buy for me. I'll probably get there sometime around 8PM. :)

wow, I didn't realize this thread started last year until I saw the one posting from a guy hoping to get an xbox360. Wonder if he did.

Can anyone explain to me what doorbusters are? Are they just the early-bird ones you have to get there early and get tickets for or are they just all the sales. I'm seeing a lot of references to a doorbuster time period. When is that usually?

Sorry, actually haven't done the BF thing before cuz I usually try to get everything I can off the forums the rest of the year. lol

in my understanding, should be Thursday. Only problem is that some stores do their BF on Thanksgiving instead of BF. Most stores should be Thursday. Keep in mind some stores are releasing BF info online supplemental to the printed ads (ie deals for In-store that you can only read online).

Wallmart is releasing extra BF info on Thursday night.
